About WUF

Every two years, a remarkable event takes place that shapes the future of our towns and cities: the World Urban Forum. It’s a global gathering that brings together visionaries, policymakers, and innovators to tackle the challenges facing our rapidly growing cities.

This November, we’re taking a bold step forward at the 2024 World Urban Forum in Cairo. We’re launching the Positive Cities pledge – our groundbreaking initiative giving a voice to our street dogs and cats, showing how caring for them can benefit entire communities.

But we can’t do this alone. We need your help and support to make this vision a reality. If you are attending the WUF in Cairo this November, please join us.

What: Paws for Progress – Dog Population Management for Safe and Healthy Cities
When: Wednesday 06 November, 1:00pm-2:30pm
Where: Multipurpose room 3, Hall 2, Egypt International Exhibition Centre

The launch is just the beginning. We will welcome and celebrate new ‘Positive Cities’ in the months and years to come, so please get in touch if you can connect us to a city near you.

Together, we can create urban environments that are kinder, more compassionate, and truly positive for all inhabitants – people and animals alike.

In many cities, free-roaming dogs and cats are valued parts of community life. However, without proper care and management, these populations can lead to challenges such as traffic accidents involving animals, the spread of diseases like rabies, noise and environmental pollution, and high rates of animal suffering – all of which impact both animals and people.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. The Positive Cities Pledge demonstrates how effective dog and cat population management can:
• Improve public health and safety.
• Enhance the quality of life for citizens.
• Build a stronger culture of compassion and animal welfare.
• Promote a kinder society for both people and animals.
• Support sustainable urban and economic development.
• Foster community engagement and education.
At this launch event, we’ll celebrate the world’s first Positive Cities – Bangkok and Cape Town – as they showcase how evidence-based, humane approaches have succeeded in different parts of the world and could work in cities like yours.
Be inspired by leaders from cities across Asia, Africa, and Europe as they share real-life success stories, demonstrating how improving the welfare of dogs and cats can benefit local communities, businesses, and visitors alike.
Join a growing global movement for responsible urban animal management and discover how your city can become a Positive City too.
